After passing a road test, the passing result still has to be submitted to DPS before the licensing process can move forward.

Drive Smart offers an optional DPS Upload Service. Select this add-on when you book and pay for your road test. If you are eligible and you pass, Drive Smart electronically submits your road-test results to the Texas Department of Public Safety on your behalf.

1. Choose DPS Upload During Purchase

Add the DPS Upload Service while booking your road-test appointment. This add-on must be selected at the time of purchase.

2. Pass Your Road Test

Take your road test at Drive Smart using the included Drive Smart vehicle, or your own vehicle if it passes inspection.

3. Drive Smart Submits Results

If eligible, Drive Smart electronically submits the passing result to DPS, which may help you avoid a return trip to a DPS office just to submit road-test paperwork.

DPS Upload is not available if the student is within 6 months of turning 18. DPS Upload and Impact Video service fees are non-refundable.

DPS Upload does not guarantee license issuance. DPS eligibility, state fees, identification requirements, Impact Texas Drivers requirements, document requirements, and license-issuance steps still apply.

Your Drive Smart road-test vehicle is included in the road-test price. Optional services are selected during booking when available.

Same-Day Test $100 Cash only, Monday through Friday. Subject to availability.
Practice Road Test $120 Practice evaluation to help prepare before the actual road test.
DPS Upload $40 Non-refundable. Add at time of purchase. Not available if the student is within 6 months of turning 18.
Impact Video $20 Non-refundable. If you need Drive Smart’s paid Impact Video service, complete it before road-test day. DPS requires the proper Impact Texas Drivers certificate before the driving skills test.

Allowed if It Passes

Using Your Own Vehicle

Students may use their own vehicle as long as it can pass inspection and meets all road-test requirements.

  • Working turn signals
  • Working horn
  • Visible front and rear license plates when required
  • Vehicle must be safe and test-ready

Drive Smart may refuse or cancel the test if the vehicle is unsafe, documents are missing, or DPS requirements are not met.

Before You Book

Please review these important policies before scheduling your road test.

Refunds & Rescheduling

Appointment Policy

  • Refunds are allowed within 72 hours of purchase only if the appointment is more than 24 hours away.
  • No refunds for appointments within 24 hours, no-shows, late arrivals, or missing documents.
  • Arriving more than 5 minutes late or missing documents requires a $35 rescheduling fee.
  • DPS Upload and Impact Video service fees are non-refundable.
  • Credits are valid for 90 days after cancellation or reschedule; after that, a new booking is required.
  • One free retest is allowed within 90 days of the original appointment.
Documents Required

Bring Original Required Documents

  • Permits and licenses must be original, valid, not expired, and not photocopies.
  • Road tests cannot be taken with only an ID card.
  • The required Impact Texas Drivers certificate must be completed before the driving skills test.
  • If your permit or license has an “A – Corrective Lenses” restriction, glasses or contacts are required for the test.
  • Drive Smart may refuse or cancel the test if documents are missing or DPS rules are not met.

Teens 16–17

Teen Road Test Documents

  • Valid Texas learner license/permit with photo
  • Permit held for at least 6 months
  • DE-964 certificate showing completion of the full teen driver education program
  • Printed Impact Texas Teen Drivers certificate
  • Parent or legal guardian present
Adults 18+

Adult Road Test Documents

  • Valid B-restricted learner license
  • Printed Impact Texas Young Drivers certificate
  • If under age 25, proof of completion of the 6-hour adult driver education course
  • Original, valid, unexpired documents only

What if I am late or missing documents?

Do I get a free retest?
