Getting a Texas Drivers License as a non-U.S. Citizen

As a non-U.S. citizen, you’ll need to gather some specific documents and complete certain processes. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Document Preparation: You can use the interactive REAL ID Document Check Application (Click Here to use it)  to create a customized checklist of the documents you need for your visit to the Driver License Office.
  2. Required Documents:
    • Proof of lawful presence in the U.S.
    • Evidence of Texas residency.
    • Identification (like a passport).
    • Social Security Number (your SSN will be verified electronically).
    • Proof of vehicle registration and insurance if you own a vehicle.
  3. Driver Education: If you’re over 24, you won’t need the six-hour adult driver education course, if your are 24 or younger you will need an adult 6-hour course. You can enroll here.
  4. Completing the Impact Texas Driver (ITD) program is necessary if you plan to take the driving test. Here is a link to the ITD program
  5. Application Process:
    • Complete the driver license application online.
    • Make an appointment at your local Driver License Office.
    • Bring all required documentation to your appointment.
    • Pay the application fee, pass the vision exam, and take the knowledge and driving tests.
  6. Learning to Drive: I recommend seeking adult driving lessons from Drive Smart Driving School. You can learn more by clicking here.
  7. Once you have a B-Restricted Texas License you can take a road test with Drive Smart to get the B restriction removed. To Road Test with us, click here

You can find more detailed information in the Texas Driver’s Handbook, which is available online. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!
