How Does Teen Driver Education Work in Texas

  • Driver’s Education Course: Teenagers in Texas must complete a state-approved driver education course. This course consists of two parts:

    • Classroom instruction: A minimum of 32 hours, but not more than two hours per day.
    • Behind-the-wheel training: A minimum of 44 hours, which includes at least 10 hours of nighttime driving.               (Driver Education provides 14 of the 44-hour requirement, the parent provides the other 30).
  • Learner’s Permit:

    • At age 15, teens can apply for a learner’s permit after starting a driver education course.
    • To obtain a learner’s permit, the teen will need to pass the written exam, covering road signs and driving rules. Thet test is given during the classroom portion of drivers ed.
    • With the learner’s permit, the teen can only drive with a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old in the front passenger seat.
  • Provisional License:

    • After holding a learner’s permit for at least six months and reaching 16 years of age, teens can apply for a provisional license.
    • The teen must have completed the driver education course and the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program, which is a free 2-hour informational video about the dangers of distracted driving.
    • They must then pass the road test.
    • With a provisional license, there are several restrictions:
      • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless for employment, school-related activities, or emergencies.
      • For the first twelve months, the driver may not have more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member.
      • No use of mobile phones, even hands-free, except in emergencies.
  • Full, Unrestricted License: Once a driver reaches 18 and has met all previous requirements, the restrictions are lifted, and they can drive without the limitations set for provisional license holders. It’s still essential to follow all state driving laws and regulations.

Our Classes:

If you need to miss a class day, don’t worry! We can arrange make-up days for you. Our classes span for 4 weeks and are given in person or by zoom.

We recommend that once you register, you head to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s online appointment scheduler and book an appointment for a “first Time Applicant Class C License”. Make sure the appointment is at least 10 days after the first day of class as you’ll need to provide paperwork from us.

Be sure to get a Verification of Enrollment from your school or homeschool. You can get this from your attendance counselor. VOE’s that are issued during the last week of school is valid all summer long, otherwise, they will only be valid for up to 90 days.

Don’t forget! You must pass the written exam on the 4th day and be paid in full to receive the DEE964 from us to go to the DPS.
