Take the classroom portion of driver’s ed with our online Texas driving school on your own time. Then when you’re done with Drive Smart, transfer to a brick-and-mortar driving school to finish the behind-the-wheel portion.
What’s the difference between parent and instructor taught?
Our parent and instructor-taught driver’s ed courses are both great options for Texas teens getting their license, but what exactly is the difference between parent taught and instructor taught drivers ed? It comes down to who is going to be with you during the behind-the-wheel requirements. With both courses, you’ll be able to complete the classroom phase online with Drive Smart.
For our parent taught course, you will complete the 44 behind-the-wheel hours with a parent or legal guardian. For our instructor taught course, you can take your Certificate of Completion to a local driving school and practice with a professional instructor.
The big advantage of either program is you can live anywhere n Texas and take this course.

How does it all work?
- Enroll your teen in one of our upcoming classes.
- During their first week, they will study for and take the Department of Public Safety Written test. When they pass and are paid in full, they may then get a certificate to obtain a Texas Learners License.
- Keep in mind they still have 3 more weeks of the classroom to complete in order to be eligible for a driver’s license.
- Once they have a permit, they may start driving at home and scheduling their 7 (2 Hour) in-car lessons with us.
- Once the student is 16 or older, has held their permit for 6 months or longer, and has completed all classroom and in-car driving, they are eligible to take a Road Test to get their actual driver’s license.
