Finished Teen Driver Education but Now an Adult? Texas Road-Test Steps
If you finished teen driver education and are now an adult, start with the documents you already earned. Turning 18 does not mean you should automatically buy another driver education course.
Check your driver education certificate
Find the DE-964 or DEE-964 certificate showing completion for the driver license. A certificate for the learner-license stage is different from proof that the full course is complete. If your course is unfinished or a document is missing, contact the school that issued it.
DPS lists both completed teen driver education certificates and adult course certificates among the documents accepted for driving-test applicants younger than 25. Ask DPS to review your completed course records if you are unsure which application requirements remain.
Check your license and Impact certificate
Your teen learner license expires at 18. An expired permit must be addressed through DPS; it does not automatically become an adult license. Drive Smart requires a valid, unexpired Texas learner license or Class C license with restriction B for testing.
Use the current DPS Impact Texas Drivers instructions to select the video program. A certificate from years ago is no longer valid for your road test.
