Steps for a Teen to Get a Texas Driver License

1. Choose a teen driver education course

Drive Smart offers in-person teen classes in Carrollton, live Zoom classes and self-paced online options. Driving and observation lessons with Drive Smart take place in Carrollton. The Colony offers road tests only.

2. Apply for your learner license

You must be at least 15 to apply. Complete the classroom work required for your course’s learner-license stage and pass the knowledge test. DPS issues the learner license. See our teen learner-license guide and the official DPS checklist.

3. Complete the course and driving practice

The teen course includes 24 classroom hours, 7 hours of driving instruction and 7 hours of observation. Complete the additional 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. Keep your driving log and course completion documents.

4. Prepare for a provisional license

For applicants under 18, the minimum age is 16 and the learner license generally must be held for at least six months. Complete the required training and the appropriate Impact Texas Drivers program before testing.

5. Take the road test and finish the DPS process

Bring the required original documents to your test. After passing, follow the instructions for getting your license issued by DPS. A passing road-test result alone is not a driver license.
