Drive Smart offers Texas DPS-authorized road tests for eligible teens and adults in The Colony. Students from approved driving schools, online courses and parent-taught programs can test with us after meeting the document and licensing requirements.

Before you book

Check the full road-test requirements and your permit or license expiration date. Bring the required original documents and the correct current Impact Texas Drivers certificate. Additional requirements apply to applicants under 18.

The Drive Smart test vehicle is included. Review the booking page’s vehicle rules if you plan to use your own car. DPS document upload is available only to eligible U.S. citizens and must be included in the service you purchase.

A Texas teen learner license expires on the holder’s 18th birthday. It does not automatically become a valid adult license. If yours has expired, arrange a DPS appointment before you practice driving or book a road test with Drive Smart.

What should I do after turning 18?

1. Check the expiration date on your permit.
2. Gather your existing driver education certificate and the documents DPS requires for your application.
3. Apply through DPS. If you still need supervised practice, ask about a Texas Class C license with restriction B.
4. Follow the restrictions on the valid license DPS issues. An expired permit does not authorize driving.

Do I need to take driver education again?

Bring your completed teen driver education certificate to DPS. Do not buy another course just because you turned 18. DPS can confirm which completed coursework and documents apply to your situation. If you still need an adult course, Drive Smart offers online adult driver education and live Zoom or Carrollton classroom options.

Before your road test

Drive Smart requires a valid, unexpired Texas learner license or Texas Class C license with restriction B, plus the other documents listed on the booking page. A driver education certificate alone is not a permit or license.

Complete the appropriate current Impact Texas Drivers program before testing. Check its certificate date and the booking requirements.

Yes, Drive Smart requires a valid, unexpired Texas learner license or Texas Class C license with restriction B before your road test. An adult driver education certificate and an ITAD certificate do not replace a permit or license.

What does each document show?

• Adult driver education certificate: shows completion of the adult course.
• Impact Texas Adult Drivers certificate: shows completion of the required distracted-driving video program.
• Texas permit or B-restricted license: shows the driving privilege issued by DPS. Follow its restrictions when practicing.

A B-restricted license does not allow unsupervised driving. It requires a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat.

What should I do next?

If you have the course certificates but no valid Texas permit or license, use the DPS application checklist and arrange your DPS appointment. If your permit expired, read our expired-permit guide.

Complete the correct Impact Texas Drivers program for your age and circumstances. The certificate is valid for 90 days and must be presented for the driving test.

If you finished teen driver education and are now an adult, start with the documents you already earned. Turning 18 does not mean you should automatically buy another driver education course.

Check your driver education certificate

Find the DE-964 or DEE-964 certificate showing completion for the driver license. A certificate for the learner-license stage is different from proof that the full course is complete. If your course is unfinished or a document is missing, contact the school that issued it.

DPS lists both completed teen driver education certificates and adult course certificates among the documents accepted for driving-test applicants younger than 25. Ask DPS to review your completed course records if you are unsure which application requirements remain.

Check your license and Impact certificate

Your teen learner license expires at 18. An expired permit must be addressed through DPS; it does not automatically become an adult license. Drive Smart requires a valid, unexpired Texas learner license or Class C license with restriction B for testing.

Use the current DPS Impact Texas Drivers instructions to select the video program. A certificate from years ago is no longer valid for your road test.

Before booking, read the current Drive Smart road-test requirements. The documents you need depend on your age and licensing situation. Bring the required original documents, check their expiration dates and arrive ready to test.

Arrival, rescheduling and cancellations

Arrive early with all required documents. The booking rules include a five-minute grace period and a $35 rescheduling fee for applicable late arrivals or missing documents. Review the full policy before booking; it explains cancellations, refunds and retest deadlines.

Drive Smart offers road tests in Carrollton and The Colony. The Colony offers road tests only. In-person classes and driving lessons are in Carrollton.

Who needs the adult course?

First-time Texas driver-license applicants ages 18–24 generally need adult driver education. Applicants age 25 and older are not required to take driver education. DPS has exceptions, including some new residents who surrender a valid out-of-state license. Use the official DPS application requirements for your situation.

If you already completed a teen driver education program, bring your course records to DPS before signing up for another course.
